Frequently Asked Questions

To help our customers better understand PAT testing and our services, we've created a selection of frequently asked questions covering the topics we're most commonly asked about.

What is PAT Testing?

PAT Testing (Portable Appliance Testing), also known as Electrical Equipment Testing (EET), is the inspection and testing of electrical appliances to ensure they are safe to use. It helps identify faults that could cause electric shocks, fires or equipment failures.

Is PAT Testing a legal requirement?

PAT Testing itself is not a legal requirement. However, businesses, landlords and organisations have a legal duty under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 to ensure electrical equipment is maintained in a safe condition. PAT Testing is one of the most effective ways to demonstrate compliance.

How often should PAT Testing be carried out?

The frequency depends on the type of equipment and the environment in which it is used.

Examples include:

  • Offices: every 1 to 2 years
  • Schools: annually
  • Construction sites: every 3 months
  • Rental properties: typically between tenancies or annually

The appropriate testing interval can vary depending on risk assessments and usage.

What appliances need to be tested?

Most portable and electrical appliances can be PAT tested, including:

  • Computers and monitors
  • Kettles and microwaves
  • Extension leads
  • Power tools
  • Printers
  • Chargers and adapters
  • Vacuum cleaners
  • Kitchen appliances

Any appliance connected to a plug socket should be considered for inspection and testing.

Can landlords arrange PAT Testing?

Absolutely. We provide PAT Testing services for:

  • HMO properties
  • Rental properties
  • Holiday lets
  • Student accommodation

This helps landlords demonstrate that electrical appliances supplied to tenants are safe to use.

How long does PAT Testing take?

Testing times vary depending on the number of appliances and site access.

A small office may take just a few hours, while larger premises may require a full day or more.

Will PAT Testing disrupt my business?

We aim to minimise disruption wherever possible. Testing can often be carried out around your working hours, including evenings and weekends by arrangement, allowing your business to continue operating normally.

What happens if an appliance fails?

If an appliance fails testing, it will be clearly labelled and recorded in the test report. We will explain the reason for the failure and advise whether the item can be repaired or should be removed from service. We also carry out minor repairs on-site and in some circumstances be able to offer an off-site repair.

Are you qualified and insured?
